Quick answer

Yes, Personify Financial is legitimate. The company is operated by Applied Data Finance, LLC (San Diego, founded 2014), holds state lending licences through affiliates, partners with FDIC-insured First Electronic Bank, is BBB-accredited (A+) and has 12,800+ Trustpilot reviews. The loans are also expensive (36%–179.50% APR) and criticised by consumer groups for using a bank partner to lend above state rate caps. Legit and costly are both true.

How the lending actually works

The lender's own "Who Makes the Loan" table: loans with APRs below 36% come from Participating Creditors; loans at or above 36% are made by First Electronic Bank in every lending state except Georgia, where ADF of Georgia lends under a state licence. Personify markets, underwrites and services; the bank is the lender of record. Since 2026 Personify also discloses it operates as a loan lead generator, sending declined applicants to other creditors for a fee.

The rent-a-bank criticism

Banks can export their home state's interest rates nationwide; non-bank lenders cannot. Partnering with a Utah bank lets the company offer 179.50% APR in states whose own laws cap rates far lower. The National Consumer Law Center, Consumer Federation of America and others call this "rent-a-bank" and have asked federal regulators to stop it; a 2023 coalition letter to the FDIC used Personify and OppFi as its two case studies. Courts have so far mostly upheld the model, and the FDIC has not acted against First Electronic Bank. Reasonable people disagree about whether this is a loophole or a legal structure; what matters to a borrower is that the loan is enforceable and the price is real.

Washington, Pennsylvania and similar states: some CFPB complaints come from borrowers in states where Personify is not licensed and does not currently list itself as lending. If you live outside the 27 lending states and are offered a Personify loan, check your state regulator before signing.

Impostor scams using Personify's name

Well-known lender names attract impostors. Warning signs that you are not dealing with Personify:

  • Any request for an upfront "processing", "insurance" or "verification" fee — Personify charges nothing before funding and adds its origination fee to the balance.
  • Payment by gift card, crypto, Zelle or wire.
  • Guaranteed approval regardless of credit.
  • Contact from a Gmail/Yahoo address or a site other than personify.com / personifyfinancial.com / personifyls.com.
  • Pressure to decide in minutes.

Report impostors at reportfraud.ftc.gov and to your state attorney general.

And this site?

How the bank-partner model compares to the alternatives

The bank-partner model is the second-most-regulated row on that table — a real bank, FDIC supervision, federal consumer law — and the second-most-expensive. Both halves of the criticism are visible in the same row.

Legitimacy checklist for any online lender

  1. Named legal entity and physical address on the site.
  2. State licence number or named bank partner, verifiable with the regulator or FDIC BankFind.
  3. APR range, fees and payment examples published before you apply.
  4. No upfront fees of any kind.
  5. Soft inquiry to see offers.
  6. Agreement delivered for review before e-signature.
  7. Presence on BBB and the CFPB database with responses.

Personify passes all seven. So do most of its competitors. Passing the checklist tells you the lender is real; it tells you nothing about whether the loan is a good idea.

People also ask about legitimacy

Is Personify Financial FDIC insured?

Personify is not a bank and holds no deposits, so FDIC insurance does not apply to it. Its lending partner First Electronic Bank is FDIC-insured (certificate 34781, verifiable on FDIC BankFind). Insurance protects depositors of the bank, not borrowers; it has no bearing on your loan.

Is Personify licensed in my state?

In Georgia, yes, directly (ADF of Georgia, LLC). In other lending states, loans come from First Electronic Bank under its Utah charter, so a state licence is not required for the bank — which is the entire controversy. Personify also holds affiliate licences in Alabama, California, Delaware, Idaho, Missouri, New Mexico and South Carolina, three of which are not currently lending states. Your state's financial regulator can confirm who is licensed.

Has Personify been sued or fined?

Two cases surface in public dockets: Derosier v. Applied Data Finance (Florida class action, settled and dismissed 2020) and Saechao v. Personify Financial (N.D. Cal., TCPA, 2020). We found no public regulatory fine or enforcement order against Personify as of October 22, 2026. The 2023 NCLC coalition letter asked the FDIC to downgrade First Electronic Bank's CRA rating; the FDIC has not publicly acted on it.

Is personify.com the real site?

Yes. Personify moved its marketing site from personifyfinancial.com to personify.com in 2026; the old domain redirects. The borrower portal remains at myaccount.personifyfinancial.com, and the servicer is personifyls.com. Any other domain asking for your bank login "for Personify" is not Personify — including ours, which does not ask for bank logins at all.

Why did Personify add a lead-generator disclosure?

Because it now sends declined applicants to other creditors for a fee, which several states regulate as lead generation. The disclosure is on every page of personify.com and says plainly that if you don't want your information shared, don't submit the form. We say the same thing on ours.

Why do people call Personify a scam?

Usually because of the cost. 179.50% APR feels like a scam to a borrower who didn't read the total. It is legal under the bank-partner model, though consumer groups argue it shouldn't be.

Someone called me claiming to be Personify and asked for a fee. Is that real?

No. Personify never charges an upfront fee, never asks for gift cards or wire transfers, and only takes applications at personify.com. Hang up and report it to the FTC.

Yes — a Utah-chartered industrial bank, FDIC certificate 34781, founded 1998.

Has the CFPB taken action against Personify?

We found no public enforcement action as of October 2026. The CFPB complaint database contains consumer complaints, which is different.

How do I report a Personify impostor?

reportfraud.ftc.gov, your state attorney general, and Personify itself at 1-888-578-9546.
